This series was commissioned by Oprah’s Angel Network as an extension of the Seven Fountains Primary School Project. Buckland was asked to document the wider social context of the Shayamoya Township of Kokstad, where the school is situated.

Many elderly women in South Africa have taken on the role of primary carer due to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. These grandmothers have often had little or no time to grieve the loss of their own children before they adapt to their new life. They are at a stage when they should be looked after however they find themselves shouldering the weight of the broken family units and ensuring the future survival of their communities.

They are indeed ‘Grand’ in every sense.

This body of work led to Buckland being nominated for the international 2010 Prix Prixtet Award, celebrating the theme of ‘growth’.

‘GRAND’ MOTHERS OF SHAYAMOYA is currently part of a group exhibition, ‘South African Voices – Towards a A Museum of HIV Memory & Learning’ at KwaMuhle Museum, Durban, Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa.
