This series is about rites of passage.
Young men in the Xhosa tribes of the Eastern Cape leave their families for several weeks, marking their transition from boyhood to manhood. They are known as initiates (Abakweta) and undergo ritual circumcision, a period of isolation in preparation for their adulthood.
In 2015 Buckland encountered a family of young Xhosa men at the end of their confinement. Through consultation with their teacher and family representative, Buckland was given permission to take their portraits. This project remains in production with additional photography and research to be completed in 2017.
